About

Denise Bibro began exhibiting the work of a diverse group of contemporary artists in corporate and alternative spaces in 1980. After showcasing work at her art salon in Union Square, 1987, she saw the opening of her first gallery in SoHo. Denise Bibro Fine Art moved to its current Chelsea location in 1997, and encompasses the main gallery as well as a project space, Platform, providing over 4,000 square feet of exhibition space. Presenting and promoting both emerging and established artists, the gallery has an emphasis on painting, works on paper, sculpture, and multi-media works. The programming for Platform explores more conceptual work, including video and installation works, as well as presenting collaborative projects with other curators and dealers.

  • Shonagh Adelman

Biography : Shonagh Adelman’s crystal method deploys thousands of colored 4mm glass and acrylic crystals on canvas. A variety of other media (including plasticine, tablets, photographs, and plastic eyeballs) are embedded within the crystal surface. Beast and the Booty, the first of the ‘crystal method’ series, conjures familiar archetypes of beauty and beastliness reflecting them back onto “the eye of the beholder” (a reference to the 1960’s Rod Sterling Twilight Zone episode) as light refracts off the shiny glass surface and into the viewer’s retina. Disorderly Conduct, the second series, depicts bizarre scenarios of dissonant action, character and place. Carnival figures romp through the opulent rooms of Chateau Versailles and the Paris Opera house, the glittery hue amplifying pre-revolutionary excesses. The third series, Chamber of Beauties, takes one of the rooms in Versailles as its inspiration. Portraits of women, replete with gilded frames, are rendered in 4mm colored crystals and plasticine. Unlike their namesake, which was originally intended to house seventeen portraits of women in Louis XIV’s court (and never completed), these portraits conjure the ominous association of “chamber” with a confined space, a prison, and puts the contextual, sexual constructs underlying beauty and booty into sharp shiny relief. The fourth in the series, Loopies, uses the crystal method to re-visit gender tropes, some familiar, others strange. Embedded film loops of moving body parts (lips, eyes, head etc.) breath life into stylized, static host bodies; the composure of still figures, jarred by moving cliches of seduction (pursing, blinking, winking). Undermining and highlighting the fetishistic gaze, film loops transform crystalized bodies simultaneously fulfilling and defying stereotypical expectations. The fifth series, Beastiful, culls from an array of storytelling traditions, envisioning an eclectic species of animal/human hybrid. Mythology injects

  • Sara Crisp

Biography : Embracing the sacred universality of the circle, Eastern spirituality, and the ability of a simple plant to symbolize life force, Crisp’s mixed-media and encaustic works incorporate delicate, meticulous patterning paired with botanical elements such as flower petals, stems, and seed pods. Where she previously integrated bones and skeletons into her work, this new series is notable for their absence, rendering it more life affirming. Looser symmetry and more random patterning have also evolved, conveying a joyous sense of musicality, spaciousness, and breath. In the artist’s words, the work is about “inspiring the sacred, the contemplation of the sacred in the mundane, and the exalted in the universal.” Crisp has mounted solo exhibitions throughout New England and New York. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, and received several awards and reviews. Crisp studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design and is represented exclusively by Denise Bibro Fine Art in New York City.

  • Laura Gurton  (+)

Detailed Description : Laura Gurton’s paintings evolve from a refined process that balances chance and control. The artist’s method, refined over many years, makes use of both oil paint and resin. Because the interactions of these two media are complex and sometimes difficult to predict, Gurton’s way of working requires a deft touch and an acute sense of timing. She has developed various formulas consisting of oil paint and alkyd medium, a resin. After covering the entire canvas with either a transparent glaze or using one of the formulas of opaque paint mixed with the alkyd medium, she then touches the canvas with a brush filled with another formula. Working on a flat surface, the paint will spread from the point where the brush touched the canvas into a circular, organic shape. Depending on the viscosity of the paint and the formulas used, various textures and patterns will occur. The resulting images are composed of multiple layers of translucent glazes, imparting levels of depth and revealing patterns analogous to microscopic cellular forms. With the addition of each layer, these forms begin to overlap, evoking a passage of time. Biomorphic shapes reminiscent of visual information gleaned from x-rays, CT scans, and electron microscopes float across the surface of the artist’s canvases. Gurton states that her work reflects her admiration for all scientific investigations. In nature, fundamental processes produce forms that are similar, but never identical. Think of the seemingly infinite variety of leaves, for example, or the fact that there are billions of human beings on the earth at this time, no two exactly alike. Gurton’s way of applying paint remains constant from painting to painting, and yet, as in nature, great variety is found in her work. This variety can be seen in her choice of colors, the relative density of her signature circular forms in different areas of the compositions, and the overall flow of imagery; some paintings seeming tranquil, ot

Detailed Description : Visual pleasure and beauty with a sardonic touch are key aspects of my work. Highly refined forms in plastic and rubber refer to pop utopian visions, mandalas or commercial icons. The Mirror Pours are wall works consisting of florescent-pigmented rubber poured on glass mirrors. The viscous material mixes and flows unpredictably, creeping off the edges, creating patterns reminiscent of psychedelia or the cosmos. The Flower Clusters are sculptural works of dense amalgams of vegetation. Images of twisting knotted flowers and vines are cast in plastic, coated with a high-gloss resin. Imagined nature from the arts and crafts movement is inspirations, another period of optimism that is reflected in fantastic imagery.
