About

The gallery, located in Santander, was opened to the general public in 1988 under the name of its founder, Fernando Silió. From its origins, the style of the gallery leads towards the most avant-garde tendencies of Contemporary Art, combining exhibitions by well-known artists with younger artists who are establishing their positions within the art market. In 1995 a new stage in the gallery began, incorporating to its activities the periodical edition of exclusive original prints and photography.

In 1999 Juan Silió, son of the founder, takes on the direction of the gallery and starts to change the line of the gallery, incorporating artists of internacional renown, more presence of new technology and photographic works as well as more presence of young artists.

The gallery started working with the main representatives of Spanish art outside, such as Joan Fontcuberta, Daniel Canogar or Darío Urzay while opportunities are given new values of this field as Carlos Irijalba, Rosell Meseguer or Miguel Ángel Tornero in the national field or Michael Najjar internationally.

At the same time, the gallery continues with an interesting pictorial offer where are combined artists such as Juan Uslé, Juan Ugalde, Abraham Lacalle or Antonio Mesones with new and important values like Rafael Macarrón, Gorka Mohamed or Alain Urrutia.

In 2005 the Gallery changes its location, opening a 300 m2 new space with a 100 m2 storage room, 150 m2 of exhibition space and 50 m2 of offices. There is also an external warehouse of 150 m2.

In 2006, after the founder’s passed away, the gallery name was changed, being presented in ARCO 2007 under the current name: Galería Juan Silió.

In parallel with the exhibitions in our space, the gallery attends art fairs both national as international such as ARCOmadrid (since 1991), Untitled Miami, VOLTA NY or NEXTChicago.

Exhibiting Artists

  • Rafa Macarrón  (+)

Biography : Macarrón creates unique characters that reclaim the attention of each piece and that incarnate both the universal and the unrepeatable. We can observe the design of the bodies of the main characters: humans and animals of legs way too long to resist the weight of their heads. The figures are always portrayed on a neutral background: blue, pink, water green; and in every scene the line that cuts the vertical plan of the background with the horizontal one is the only line that we recognize as a feature of our world. On his paintings, Macarrón creates dream-like scenarios and a world of uncommon characters that, despite their drama and deformity, bear tenderness and kindness. With a defined style and language, his drawing is fluid, fresh and harmonic. Influenced by the comic, 50’s and 60’s painting, Dubuffet, Fraile, Matta or Quirós, Macarrón is becoming a referent of today’s painting. Winner of the BMW painting prize in 2011, he has been present in diverse countries and has participated in numerous fairs, such as Zona Maco, ArtBo, Art Miami or Art Moscow.
