About

Bert van Zetten, Nemo Jantzen, Marcel and Jutta Huisman founded Villa del Arte Galleries in Barcelona in 1999. Their combined commitment, and passion for art, together with a unique approach and willingness to exhibit cutting edge young artists alongside firmly established names has contributed to an ever-changing contemporary collection of a consistently high standard.

Over time Villa del Arte has developed into one of Spain’s leading contemporary art galleries. The gallery represents over 30 national and international, established and emerging painters, photographers and sculptors. In addition, we recently opened a new gallery in Amsterdam which has provided Villa del Arte with greater capabilities to undertake exhibition projects. With this new space our international presence in the art scene has grown noticeably providing new opportunities and projects that we are already working on.

In 2006 after concentrating our focus on Spain, we participated in our first international art fair. Following this success we have since continued our international trajectory with numerous exhibitions, boutique fairs and renowned art fairs such as Context Art Miami, Art Chicago, Art London, Art Stage Singapore, Art Stage Jakarta, Art New York, FADA (Los Angeles), New Art Fair (France), Scope Basel, Asia Contemporary Art Show, Houston Fine Art Fair, Art Hamptons, Art Taipei, Art Palm Beach, LA Art Show, Contemporary Istanbul, India Art Fair and Art Toronto.

This constant travel provides beneficial opportunities by way of bringing exciting fresh international artists into our collection, whilst simultaneously gaining a close up view of new artistic directions that are then often reflected in the permanent central Barcelona exhibition space.

Biography : Marc Harrold found photography through his involvement in the journalism world. In 1980 he participated in the creation of the Filtra-Presse agency. In the nineties his perspective changed, photography and the advertising became his main professional focus. He started to work with many advertising agencies including: Leo Burnett, Publicis Estrella, Grey, EURORSCG, 46°nord. At the same time he continued to develop his personal artistic work that is now such a crucial part of his life. The artist takes series of photos of places at different times of the day, sometimes randomly, to emphasize the interaction between the light and the shade, the effect of time on the beauty of the instant. This way, probable or more unlikely encounters unveil the invisible from the visible. His photos are a refletion on the fickleness of people, of things. Signs that draw their way through light and shadow. Aesthetitism is important to him to carry his thoughts and feelings. His work is not intended to carry any specif message, but rather to share an emotion that is magnified by the experience ¬of the observer.

  • Christiaan Lieverse  (+)

Biography : Christiaan Lieverse 1971, born in Utrecht, NL, lives and works in the Netherlands The red thread running through Lieverse’s figurative work has always been man and psyche. His paintings seek to captivate viewers and raise questions, while at the same time permitting individual interpretations. Basically, these are psychological portraits. Many canvases place the viewer in the role of an almost voyeuristic observer. However, these pieces can also be perceived as confrontational, as they place the viewer in an active role, and create a “silent” dialogue between viewer and painted figure. By only painting a vague backdrop or omitting it altogether, the margins of the linen are not the margins of the story. Lieverse works with a range of models he photographs in his studio, but he also gets his ideas from newspapers, magazines, travel and things he encounters on the street. By compiling his accumulated images, he develops ideas for new works. In the series “Dutch girls” he gives us portraits of young, contemporary Dutch women, whose self-assurance and strength is clearly palpable, in part because the images have been magnified. Lieverse issues a “limited edition” of many of his originals. This consists of a graphic reproduction of the original in an edition of 25, which are then hand painted by Lieverse with acrylics and oil paint and signed. As well as figurative work, Lieverse also creates abstract paintings. These pieces tend to be inspired by the inanimate, man-made world, which is broken down by nature and time. By blowing up details, Lieverse renders the element of “time” more tangible. In other abstract works the emphasis is primarily on repetition and rhythm. Thanks to the rough and ready application of various materials, which contributes to their dynamic quality, viewers almost experience these canvases as objects. Composition and the use of sober colours are crucial to the tranquillity and simplicity he strives for.

  • Claudia Meyer  (+)

Biography : Claudia Meyer was born in Switzerland in 1961 and has lived and worked in Paris and Luzern as an independent artist since 1989. She trained as a graphic designer at the Hochschule für Gastaltung und Kunst in Luzern from 1977 to 1982. She then spent a year in Stuttgard, Germany where she worked as a graphics artist and made the acquaintance of Anton Stankowski, the grand master of German design, in whose Studio she was able to work. In 1986 she moved to New York and continued her studies at the School of Visual Art of New York. During this time, she focused on the expressive posibilities of fabric design and modern technologies such as the computer. She received prizes for her work during this period, which explores the border between painting and design. After her return to Europe in 1989 she devoted herself, alongside commissions, to painting and the creation of objets d'art.
Since then her work has regularly been exhibited in galleries both in Europe and the United States.

Detailed Description : Claudia Meyer's art depicts the imaginary in the reality of the material, which is magnified by the light and mingles, in turn, with the shadows of its structures, angles and volumes.
The artwork guides and enables us to exist with the artist. The generous strokes and expressive lines show us that the material is full of this luminous and translucent vacuum. Suddenly, we are taken by surprise when something appears. It is the material aspect of the energy flow. Movement emerges from the immobile forms. These spirals, these characters that resemble writing are imperceptible yet powerfully suggestive. They remind us of Japanese haikus or ancient manuscripts.
Immanent and material, Claudia's creations point to the transcendent. This transcendene that is so close to us is one of emotion and sensitivity. But also one of life and being alive today. At the heart of the temporal, her art confronts us with the universe and puts man back into a living World. It lights up the material as if to say that what is real is our language and that the artist is there to help us to see it. It speaks to us of air, water and fire. Claudia Meyer reveals a living material to us, in which light and energy open up the horizons of what is perceptible. In this sense, art is an opening, a mirror, or a dialogue, which is accessible for everyone. This art, which uses geometrical forms, goes back to primitive arts via the elementary forms that it reveals to us.

Detailed Description : Deceptive perfection: Yvonne Michiels portrays highly fashion-conscious women who view the world with a confident eye. These women comply with the dominant ideal of beauty achievable through make-up, fashion and plastic surgery. They therefore look perfect. But appearances can be deceiving. The perfect facades conceal feelings of insecurity, despair and vulnerability. As slavish fashion victims, these women suffer from the compulsion to strive for the – partially self-imposed – ideal image. Beauty versus mortality: The observer is directly affected by the strong emotional charge of the pictures. Vulnerability is a major theme for Yvonne, and is a recurring motif in all her work. In her latest work, she examines this theme from the viewpoint of the threats she increasingly sees people around her struggling with. Yvonne subtly ‘projects’ the threats onto her models, emphasizing the contrast between beauty and health, on one side, and decline and mortality on the other. Looking longer, you will discover a tremendous stratification behind the pretty picture.
