Liquid art system (L.a.s.) is a commercial contemporary art organisation with galleries currently open in Capri (Italy), Positano (Italy), London (UK) and Istanbul (Turkey). Together, all galleries form a system that proposes a ”glocal”* approach to the promotion of contemporary art. The target of L.a.s. is to create an international system of art galleries in different locations around the world that operate for a common purpose, but adaptive to the local economy and culture. L.a.s. responds to the evolution of the international “art system”, derived from enormous changes in the international economy and from the expansion of computer technology and the internet. The cultural affirmation of developing countries has challenged the traditional concept of art galleries, relating to the alleged superiority of the economy and culture of the West. It is necessary to devise a new concept for galleries that is suitable to this new global market, but that also has the ability to pay close attention to local instances which deserve to be highlighted.

Today L.a.s. is among the leading Italian groups able to interact with hotel facilities and to turn modern art into the protagonist of a new concept of reception. Among the main collaborations, L.a.s. has worked to combine exhibition projects and hospitality - in Italy - with Capri Palace and Tiberio Palace, Capri, Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, Sorrento, Aldovrandi Palace, Rome, - abroad - with international luxury hotels of the Doğuş Group and, since the opening of its show room in Mayfair, London, with the Westbury Hotel.

* The word "glocal" is derived from “glocalization” (Roland Robertson, sociologist), meaning ‘think global, act local’. A combination of the words "global" and "local" used to describe a product or service that is developed and distributed globally, but is also fashioned to accommodate the user or consumer in a local market.

  • Elisa Anfuso  (+)

Biography : Elisa Anfuso was born in 1982 in Catania, where she lives and works. She holds a degree in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania and a specialization in Art Education. In 2010 he was among the winners of the International "Arte Laguna" prize, finalist of the "Combat" prize, she received an honorable mention at the "Premio Celeste" prize and won the competition "Subway Editions". In 2011 she was among the finalists of the"Arte Mondadori" prize. In these years she was selected and participated in important exhibitions and fairs of contemporary art. His works are in important private collections. She collaborates with Square Gallery, the Fine Art department of Liquid Art System, since 2013. A careful reflection underlies the work of Elisa Anfuso. As a game, the artist seems to paint; as a game, she seems to portray the reality, although her painting is so refined and so precise in characterizing every single detail on the canvas. The communication that Elisa Anfuso creates between the figurative level and the “imaginative” level – that she portrays on the background with the lines of a child drawing – underlines the integration between the actual actions made by her characters and their will to carry them out, which often comes from wishes, experiments, memories, encounters, and so on, arising from childhood. We are aware of a few wishes, a few dreams, during the childhood, and they go along with us for all of our life. Many of our actions, of our behaviours, just support those urges which arise from our childhood experiments... as a game, indeed. Disguising, imaginary conversations with objects and animals, unusual connections between visual elements which belong to different sensorial spheres or to different contexts seem to be built on Elisa Anfuso's canvases to show the hidden side of our conscience, which nevertheless is always real and go along with us for all of our life.

  • Agostino Arrivabene  (+)

Biography : Agostino Arrivabene was born at Rivolta d’Adda, near Cremona, Italy on June 11, 1967. After graduating in 1991 at the Brera Art Academy in 1991, he focused on painting, drawing and etching. His first solo exhibition – titled “Exploration“, was held at the Church of Santa Maria at Source, in his native Rivolta d’Adda, immediately after graduating in 1992. From the Nineties onward he began an intense period of activity, with included many group exhibitions as well as being represented at contemporary art fairs in Italy. “Exploration” was also the first of a consistent line of solo exhibitions, held almost every year until the most recent “L’ospite parassita”, at MAC – Contemporary Art Museum, Lissone (MB) Italy. As a winner of the International Amateur d’Estampes Leonardo Sciascia, Agostino Arrivabene became widely known for his drawings and his etchings. This lead to numerous exhibitions, such as that held in 1995 at the Biblioteca Comunale Sormani Palace in Milan. Through contact with famous Italian Art reviewer Vittorio Sgarbi, Agostino participated in many important exhibitions patronized by Sgarbi himself as, for example, the Italian Pavilion of 54° Biennale of Venice (2011). On 29 June 2013, the Panorama Museum in Bad Frankenhausen, Germany, exhibited his first retrospective exhibition. His Works are exhibited in permanence in Public or Private Collections, such as: VAF Foundation, Frankfurt am Mein (DE); Chateau du Gruyère Collection, Gruyère (CH); Achille Bertarelli Collection, Sforza Castle, Milan (I); Michetti Foundation, Franca Villa al Mare (I); Cappuccine Museum, Bagnacavallo (I); Maramotti Collection, Reggio Emilia (I).

Detailed Description : At the beginning of his artistic career Agostino Arrivabene traveled extensively in Europe’s museums to gain a first hand view of their masterpieces of which he often made faithful reproductions. This research allowed him to revitalise and apply forgotten painting techniques to utilise neglected materials and to prepare colours according to traditional methods (from lapis lazuli, cinnabar, pure indigo, madder, bistre, dragon’s blood, orpiment and from other materials). Thus, he started a never ending exploration of traditional artistic techniques, from painting to graphics and engraving. Arrivabene usually prefers to paint with oils on wood or canvas, but will at times work with tempera to achieve unusual creations with an ancient, medieval or even Renaissance flavour. Often he uses very valuable pigments made by hand. He is very much inspired by the aura of mystery that surrounds the Old Masters such as Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer. Arrivabene creates visions of the ancient rich in symbolism, drawing upon subjects dear to him -“animals, natural wonders, landscapes, vanitates, still lifes and portraits – depicting imaginary worlds, that the artist himself defines as “a modern virtual Wunderkammern”.

  • Michelangelo Bastiani  (+)

Biography : Michelangelo Bastiani, a Florentine artist, was born in Bibbiena (AR) in 1979. After getting his diploma at the Art Institute of Florence, he graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts with a major in Paintings and Photography under maestro Gustavo Giulietti. He lived in the United States, first in California, then in New York. Today he works and lives in Tuscany. Career-wise he is praised for his exhibitions in both Italy and abroad: he is represented from Aria Art Gallery in Florence, Barbara Paci Gallery in Pietrasanta, Liquid art system in Capri-Positano-London, SpazioMR Gallery in Rome,  he has a permanent installation in the centre of Capri, he exhibited in Venice, Florence, Milan, Capri, Pietrasanta. He had displayed his work in London, Frankfurt, Oslo, Rome, Kiev and Istanbul and in the United States in New York, at the Mana Contemporary Museum of Jersey City, at the Art Context New York, Houston Art Fair and at the Jim Kempner Gallery in New York.

Detailed Description : Bastiani’s work is composed of interactive video projections and hologram installations on led screens, concentrated on the theme of water. Since the beginning of his career, water has been the core of artistic investigation of this artist, willing to represent an art that always changes, that it is never the same, features that the element intrinsically carries with itself. Because of its dynamic nature, water has always been difficult to represent. The strategy to solve this problem is through technology which allows a tangible interaction, a direct connection with the viewer: a waterfall will never have a constant flow, but it changes according to the people passing in front of it, who become effectively a part of the kinetic process of the work. The natural is compared to the artificial; the strength of the elements finds its representation in an antithetic marriage. A marriage of imprisonment of nature caused by man, but at the same time an exaltation and necessity from one to the other.

  • Recep Batuk  (+)

Biography : Recep Batuk is an Istanbul based painter who works and teaches in his studio in Beyoglu, the historic and cultural core of the city. Batuk received his BFA in 1993 from Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul, Turkey. His paintings have been showcased in Brooklyn Artist's Gym, Brooklyn, New York; I-5 Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Modern Arts Gallery, Istanbul; Galeri Binyil, Istanbul; UPSD Gallery, Istanbul; Datca Betce Gallery, Istanbul; Tutun Deposu, Istanbul; Tuyap Art Fair, Istanbul among numerous other venues. Incidentally, he produced and hosted his own TV and radio shows for over a decade that had he same underlying qualities as his paintings.

Detailed Description : Defined by a loud palette and a sense of sarcasm, Recep Batuk’s paintings juxtapose mundane objects, vignettes from everyday life with storybook characters and outlandish fantastic elements in seemingly irrelevant combinations that lack a sense of worldly time and place. The explosion of color and inanity sets the tone for Batuk’s world, which is simultaneously dark, raucous, obsessive, sophisticated, satirical, humorous, whimsical, playful and juvenile. A sense of contradiction is also evident in the artists’ use of traditional, Renaissance inspired compositional devices on one hand and a naïve painting style on the other. In Batuk’s compositions, divergent elements are each windows to or snapshots of an idiosyncratic dimension with its own visual language, set of values and symbolisms. The audience is to use their own imagination and sensibilities to decipher this schizophrenic reality and make it their own.

  • Maurizio Bonfanti

Biography : Son of painter Angelo Bonfanti, Maurizio Bonfanti attended Bergamo's Liceo Artistico and studied etching at the Accademia di Belle Arti in the same city. Though he enrolled to study modern literature at Milan's Universita Statale, in 1973 he left that course of study to dedicate himself to the arts. From 1976 to 1983, Bonfanti taught drawing and visual communications at a technical school in Bergamo. He spent the decade of the 1970's working exclusively on etching, but then moved on to painting. He has produced a number of series dealing in particular with religious themes, and experimenting with various techniques to render the human form, landscapes, and cityscapes. His paintings have been exhibited in personal and collective exhibitions throughout Italy and in Montecarlo, France, Spain, and the USA since 1978. Bonfanti has also participated in two prestigious exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Centre Schalkwijk in Utrecht and held major exhibitions in Lineart, Gend, Belgium, and Holland. Most recently, he was also commissioned to create pieces for the Shoah Memorial to remember the victims of the Second World War. Bonfanti says of his work, "Though we're offended by intolerance and discrimination in any form and abhor injustice that debases human dignity while embracing peace, our words and actions do not always correspond in our daily lives. (...) Art seems to have lost its critical voice and is increasingly subject to a set of values determined by the rules of the market. If I were forced to stop dreaming and ponder reality with lucid rationality and objectivity, the image of Man I've been depicting who is injured and under attack would have to be replaced by a surface covered solely with deep, silent wounds. By representing the human figure naked and exposed, I declare its supremacy; by not including the subject's face, I highlight his or her body language. I give them an awareness with theatrical poses, and the subjects are acted on, so the real protagon

  • Giacinto Bosco  (+)

Biography : Born in 1956 in Alcamo (in Sicily), obliged by the necessities of daily life, he found his way to local workshops where he was tutored and guided by experienced artisans. At 15 he moved to Milan where his vocation led him to embrace the profession of artistic caster, which he still pactices today. The foundry where he worked became the meeting place for sculptors and artist, whome he drew insipiration and stimulation. In 1990 he became a member of “Società per le Belle Arti ed Esposizione Permanente” (known as “La Permanente”) and he received his first public commissions: “The Light” (1997), in Rescaldina; then, the Statue of John Paul II (2006), in Arese; “A Peaceful World” (2008) for the City of Garbagnate, followed by the Monument dedicated to the Carabinieri who fell in Nassiriya (2008/2009), in Borgosesia; and, the same year, the Statue of Pope Benedict XVI in Santa Maria di Leuca. Afterwards, his “Aphorisms of the Moon” take him into a poetic dimension that, like in a dream, his imagination transforms and moulds into sculptures.

Detailed Description : Giacinto Bosco's sculptures have an ancient origin. His works – all of figurative nature – remind shapes and materials which have always been used in the western artistic culture. This feature makes the sculptures immediately readable by the viewer. Bosco's technical mastery – which origins from the thousand-year old tradition of “lost wax” bronze casting – has been updated thanks to the knowledge of more modern and industrial techniques and tools, that make his sculptures extremely sophisticated both on the inside (casting) and on the outside (patina). From an iconographic standpoint, his sculptures never represent isolated characters or shapes, but groups of one or more figures with objects. These objects are used by Bosco as mediation elements, able to clarify the action performed by the individual figure or the relationship between the two figures: they are concise objects, with an essential shape, chosen for their symbolic value. The basic contour of these objects, in fact, does not refer to a style – and, subsequently, an historical period – but only to a specific function, which has always been present in the history of mankind. They are archetypical shapes: the chair, as metaphor of stability and equilibrium for the body; the ladder, as metaphor of a climb; the rope, as a symbol of “capture” or (sentimental) bond; the moon as symbol, par excellence, of romantic love, and so on.

Detailed Description : Perpetual motion like celestial mechanics becomes the associative scaffolding of this artistic operation. The kinetic process of the Hypertraits translates into both TRANSLATORY MOTION: the movement of the observer’s body induces the movement of the image which in its turn induces the movement of the body, and an IMMERSIVE MOTION in the depths of the perception. Circumstance is what regulates the uniqueness of the Hypertrait experience, the revolutions and the reiteration of the cycle. They will always be different because of the observer’s ability to break down and then piece together the material presented. Ciceri's personal blurring technique is the result of the painstaking practice of breaking down the focus of the images and then putting it back together in their elementary colour patterns, he is almost a painter working with the pigments of optical photosynthesis. Motion is an illusion just as stillness is an illusion. The paradox of life is thus expressed by highlighting a loss of centrality in favour of a new axis of rotation, consisting of the actual artwork itself. “Each unique piece is a heroic deed” U.C.

Detailed Description : PETER DEMETZ - ARTWORK Demetz installations push within a frame of the everyday life, they talk about the simple gestures. The subjects are caught in very singular poses, the men, often bald, strong an big as for the artist these features depict masculinity. The women are accurately represented to the finest detail, accessories, hair and clothing which show a strong femininity. Yet both men and women must be very average people, with no specific characteristics that show their age or their social status in order to let the observer focus on the being per se, their essence, their soul. Often caught from behind, the author “steals” in a snapshot his desire to preserve his intimacy. No eye contact is ever established with the observer, as if these figures were trapped in their own world, where they seem to be aware of being observed, and where the space is facing the observer. Demetz' works express a strong sense of soul searching where the subjects are caught in very intimate moments, a slice of life from where they show the true nature of existence.

Through his father, Evangelisti was able to meet Maestro Luciano Ventrone, studying under him first in his studio in Casalpalocco near Rome and later in Collelongo near Aquila. In 1996, Evangelisti was invited the XII Quadrennial "Ultime Generazioni" in Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni, which was the first real recognition of his work.

Detailed Description : His talent to paint has passed the most skilled figurative painters in the duplication of reality. His first thought is “amazing”. He is inspired deeply by Baroque painters (especially Caravaggio) and other Old Masters of Romanticism, Academism, and Symbolism (David, Ingres, Girodet, Gericault, Gleyre, Bouguereau, Moreau, Redon, Rops, etc.). The eye of this artist records and plays back the order of things in a world where everything works, and there is also the space for evil Ferri brings dreams into reality, so the harmony of forms dominates the subjects even in their most daring twists. The human figure for Ferri is inevitable but also triumphant and heroic. His works are already present in many important private collections in London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Miami, New York, San Antonio, Rome, Milan, Malta, Dublin, Boston, and the Castle of Menerbes, Provence.

  • Omar Galliani  (+)

Biography : Omar Galliani was born in Montecchio Emilia in 1954, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and began working in his hometown, where he still lives and works. Galliani currently teaches painting at the Accademia di Carrara and is considered an internationally renowned artist. From the eighties Galliani was invited to three editions of the Venice Biennale (in1982/84/86); in 1982 he was invited in the São Paulo Biennal, to the 12th Biennal of Paris and the Biennal of Tokyo. In 2003 the artist was invited to participate to the Biennal of Prague and to the first Beijing Biennal, where he was awarded the first prize. Following numerous domestic and international exhibitions, he achieves international recognition at contemporary art museums in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Kyoto, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Miami and Los Angeles and in many other cities all over the world. The Chinese tour in 2006 of the exhibition "Omar Galliani. Disegno Italiano" seals his worldwide reputation; the tour ends with the exhibition “Tra Oriente e Occidente” in the Querini Stampalia Foundation at the Venice Biennale. Last goal, the acquisition of the "Night" triptych and two drawings by the Uffizi Cabinet of Drawings and Prints.

Detailed Description : In the 1970s, he shared the trends of the "Anacronist Group", supported by Maurizio Calvesi, referring to a typically Italian humanistic culture, reformulating and contaminating iconographies and classical subjects, that clad, with in antiquity, myths typical of contemporary timest. Galliani, contrary to conceptual art and contemporaneous multimedia techniques, recovers the pictorial element as an expressive language and replicates classic subjects and iconographies by freely contaminating them. The experience with the Anacronist Group remains the focal point of his artistic development. In fact, despite Galliani's experience in various techniques, from painting to installation, his research focuses on pencil and charcoal designs. The modern reading of consolidated traditions expresses his will to identify with his work a poetic and temporal continuity between past and present. The subjects of his works (women, body details, objects) appear as symbols, appearances, poetic views that dissolve in the dualism between light and darkness. The stready stroke of the pencil is dematerialized in chiaroscuro: it recalls the great masters of the past expressing the present existential condition.

  • Marco Grassi  (+)

Biography : He was born in Milan in 1966 and he lives and works in Mariano Comense. For the past ten years Marco Grassi has been working with a sense of responsibility in his works, always being faithful to the figurative style of his works, never has he allowed this to become an object of fashion or only satisfying a momentary taste. His language and his subjects have always remained constant and declaringly connected to his sense of vision and to the taste of his complex sensitivity, whenever such choices – the fashionable female figure, certain colour combinations, use of lacquering, the repletion with minimum variations of the subjectshave labelled him, unjustly so, a Pop artist. He collaborates with the White Room Art System since 2010.

Detailed Description : It is true that the privileged subjects of Grassi are delicate and attractive, but also energetic and resolute, female figures shown in fashionable, bright colours, but this should not be sufficient to frame the artist in a genre which is his only in the form but certainly not in the contents of his art. Marco Grassi renounces an element which up until now was a decisive element and part of the architecture of every part of his work. In his most recent works we witness a complete absence of design: the sure and confident stroke with which he traced outer anatomic lines, showing stability in the whole of the figure, compared to a choice of bold colours which transforms and breaks down under the effect of spatula and drippings, is less obvious. The figure loses the factor of certainty and sureness, a base which permitted it to integrate itself completely in the complex weave of colour, now depicted in a more decisive background and efficiently connected to the expression of faces and the intensity of their silence and complice with those who observe.

  • Andrea Pacanowski

Biography : Andrea Pacanowski was born in Rome in a family characterized by a strong artistic sensibility: father, architect, aunt Ecole de Paris painter, grandmother sculptor. Pacanowski constructed his path: graduated from artistic lyceum and started to rise through the ranks in the studio of Alberta Tiburzi, Italian photographer with internationally known. Andrea is a fashion photographer for more that 20 years. He worked in Italy and abroad, mostly in Canada and United States, affirming his creativity in collaboration with editorials (Marie Claire, Elle, Vogue Italia, L’Uomo Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Kult), publications of photographic services and advertising campaigns. From his continuous experimentation, in constant dialogue with the trends of artistic contemporaneous panorama, today has the origins an evolution and technical research, in which the photograph seems to mix with the painting in a union, which from virtual becomes real, tangible. The photographic language becomes so exasperated to lead to the creation of three dimensional, original and unique picturesque images. From the use of an absolutely unusual technique, where the photograph remains itself without any intervention of post-production, are born infinite solution in which it turns into a painting (piece of art). This photographic technique, complex and elaborated, has been developed at audiovisual level, with the added value of movement, dynamics and sound, as in the video installation “Acquario”. Looking for the right light, the perfect view, the optimum mix of shapes and colours, the video reflects the artistic photographic experience.

  • Silvio Porzionato  (+)

Biography : Born in Moncalieri (Turin) in 1971. He is a figurative painter who centres much of his work on paintings in oil and acrylic on extremely large canvas, utilizing photographs of his friends or himself. After a diploma from Art school, and a decade of creating designs for an important agency in Turin, he then decided to start a new life in the silence of Roero (Cuneo) in close contact with nature and with his art. His work has been exhibited since 2007 when he was selected for the Premio Arte Mondadori. In 2010 he won the critics prize at Saluzzo Art and created a permanent art exhibit for the Museum of Urban Art in Turin. Leading on from this, his work has formed part of numerous exhibitions, both personal and collective. In 2011 he was chosen for inclusion in the 54 Biennale of Venice, exhibiting inside both the pavillion region of Piemonte, as well as the Pavillions of Italy in Turin, Sala Nervi. He lives and works in Pancalieri (Turin). He collaborates with Liquid art system since 2015.

Detailed Description : The artist lives and works within close proximity to nature and art. Porzionato is a figurative painter who prefers oil paint and acrylic on large canvases, focusing mainly on the use of the color black and white and various shades of gray, telling painting in his personal reflections on the man and woman and, inevitably, the flow of time. As a figurative painter, he prefers oil painting on big canvas using photografies of himself or of friends. His look is orientated towards underlining the supremacy of the inner self as opposed to the cumbersome heaviness of flesh. Porzionato’s paintings show strong boldness in contrast with the loneliness and helpless nakedness of their characters, as if they were struggling with inner strength.

  • Matteo Pugliese  (+)

Biography : Matteo Pugliese was born in Milan in 1969, where he lives and works. In 1978 his family moved to Sardinia where Matteo lived for the next 12 years.

After finishing his secondary school studies in classics in Cagliari, he returned to Milan to attend university. In 1995 he was awarded his degree in Modern literature at the University of Milan with a graduation thesis on Art criticism. Encouraged by friends, in 2001 he organised and financed his first solo exhibition renting a private exhibition space in the centre of Milan. Only 18 months later he held his first “official” exhibition in a gallery in Brera, Milan, and after a fewmonths he held a solo show in Brussels.

Detailed Description : His sculpture is absolutely figurative and at the same time absolutely contemporary. These are adjectives that at first sight are hard to force into coexistence. Pugliese has adopted the path of a renewed Pop Art, original and hyper-contemporary, that dismantles the old dictates on statuary into strongly characterized and newly gestated expressive fragment. One can discern in the tense nerves and imposing limbs of his sculptures the dense musculature of the giants on the Sistine Ceiling or the sixteenth-century anatomical studies of Leonardo da Vinci, and find in the poses some hint of bacchanals, saints (Sebastian in particular), Last Judgments – but Pugliese avoids the risk of a sculpture so purely classical as to seem anachronistic…. In a display of titanic potency, his modern Telamons do not support the weight of the architecture holding them, but are an integral part of a whole from which they try to break free. The bodily violence imposed by the material is emancipated in the sculptural details, rendered dramatically expressive by Pugliese’s hands.

  • Paolo Quaresima  (+)

Biography : Paolo Quaresima, was born in 1962 in Merano (Bolzano), where he still lives and works. He graduated in 1988 at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice and from then on he devoted himself entirely to painting. At the heart of pictorial research of Quaresima there is the Man: women and men portrayed in environments absolutely essential for to focus the figure, the character, the strength. Then, from a few year, Quaresima paint also objects. Object and Objects, rather than still lifes, because with these paintings, our gaze widens to the usual tools of life, at the tools of every days. Again and always the Man, told by his things, as if he is there, just a step to the side, out of the picture. He collaborates with the White Room since 2012.

Detailed Description : The work by Paolo Quaresima is based on an almost archival research about the many cultural “resistances” coming from folk and mass realities, which characterize modern society but that seem to be neglected by the “official” culture. His work originates from a collection of objects that he collects in his studio and that – arranged on a small set – become the basic subject of his paintings; other larger objects and architectural contexts, that he observes during his trips and that he records on his camera, are added: shapes and colours which chase each other and repeat in different places, but which cannot find a place in a broader communication. His paintings can be defined neither landscapes nor still lives, but they are visions from the inside or outside which shed an unexpected light on these cultural resistances.

  • Antonio Sannino  (+)

Biography : Antonio Sannino was born in Naples in 1959; he lives and works between Naples and Rome. He inherited from his father his passion for art. This passion led him to deepen his studies by following the traces of great traditional Italian masters of landscape. In fact, it was the combination of his ambition to gain knowledge and the passion for travelling that made him visit various museums and artist studios throughout Europe. This was followed by a ten years residence in London.
He collaborates with the Square Gallery, the Fine Art department of Liquid Art System, since 2007.

Detailed Description : It takes much courage to decide to devout oneself to this kind of painting in the town where Sannino is artistically born and grown up, that is Naples. It takes much courage because – perhaps not everybody knows – the landscape painting was invented in this town, and in Naples there is the most ancient tradition of research and market: the production of this genre was linked to the Grand Tour, the journey that – since the 17th century – aristocrats, intellectuals, artists and rich bourgeois used to make to Italy in their years of formation. Sannino had the courage to create new iconographies of the Campania landscape, to search for new cuts for frames (thanks to the support of photographic and cinematographic tools), to enhance its colours also in different seasons, but – most of all – he has been able to transfer into this pictorial genre something that no other painter had been able to do when portraying these places: he pictorially reproduced the “matter” of the landscape. Sannino was able to absorb this ancient tradition of the Campania landscape: he has been assimilating, studying and testing it for many years, so that he was able to find elements of renewal; and starting from this heritage, from a technique which was mature and effective, he started to look farther, towards other landscapes, other places, where nature keeps colliding with artificial elements, in the large urban metropolises. Here, the polluted atmosphere, the wind full of artificial smog become new matter to be portrayed and reproduced for the touch, as well as the large flat surfaces covered with bitumen in order to allow the transit of cars.

Detailed Description : Ancient gods, mythological characters, religious images: in the sculptures by Federico Severino the figure once again claims its position at the heart of artistic expression. However, it is no longer a type of art sublimed by the idea of beauty. Something has changed. Severino’s collection of works, marked by a tormented style and by demonic iconography, gives into the terrifying sense (or nonsense) of human existence, in which victim and tormentor often exchange roles. Federico Severino was born in the town of Brescia in the North of Italy. His work is an art that must be revealed, understood, felt, as it offers a type of sculpture not limited to its own matter, but rather possessing the meaning, a message that the users can find response to within themselves. He revives art of the great masters of the past, yet he twists it up by giving it a decidedly contemporary point. It is also a difficult art, just as Mazzariol pointed out: “He is a difficult sculptor indeed, this Severino, not only for the complexity of the language he uses, but also for the unforgiving hollowing out all fantasy, dreams, symbols in order to arrive at the bare and ambiguous frame of forms that have the greatest impact on a sophisticated and tormenting manneristic rhythm.” Yet, the choice to offer art that is well-rooted in the past implies that Severino is an artist who is brave enough to be a non-conformist, with the assumption that he reclaims models considered to be obsolete. This allows him to pursue his main interest, that is to study the very essence of art not only as manual practice, but rather as a way to dialogue with himself and with others, a gift that makes it possible to discover our inner ghosts, to face them and to lay them bare and hence, only in this way to defeat them. If it is true that Severino tackles the fascination with the horrid it is so close to the sublime. If it is true that his world is populated by grotesque beings that are yet so fatally attractive,

  • Paolo Staccioli  (+)

Detailed Description : Born in Scandicci (Florence) in 1943, Paolo Staccioli began his career as an artist in the 1970s, starting out as a painter and soon attracting attention at the local level. In the early 1990s, the need to experiment with a new artistic vocabulary prompted him to move to Faenza, to the workshop of a local ceramist and potter called Umberto Santandrea, where he learnt the techniques and skills associated with this particular art. It was here that Staccioli produced his first vases, initially adopting the glazed ceramic technique then gradually experimenting with “reduction” firing, which allowed him to achieve an extraordinary iridescence and sheen.Having fully mastered the technique, Staccioli then set up his own studiocum-workshop in Scandicci on the outskirts of Florence, where he continued under his own steam to experiment on a daily basis with the use of fire and of copper oxides, producing a vast range of vases which he then decorated with imaginary figurative narratives fixed for eternity by an enamel sheen. These works earned him his first true recognition and success at personal and collective exhibitions as well as at important cultural events: his ceramics with their strong metallic effect and sparkling enamel finish soon won praise for their elegance and originality not only in Florentine art circles but throughout the country. The characters that populated the surfaces of his ceramics in this phase (merry-go-rounds with toy horses suspended in mid-air accompanied by winged putti, trumpet players, dolls and Pulcinellas) soon acquired a third dimension, translating into sculptures yet without losing their fairy-tale aura, their extraneity to all notion of time or place: idealized shapes reminiscent of pre-Roman statuary (of Etruscan sculpture in particular), to which the polychromy of ceramic added a vigorous effect of contrasting masses. Warriors, travellers, cardinals and horses soon joined the already varied throng of imaginary figures and began, i

Detailed Description : Wooden sculptures in full relief and worked in the round; they rise up with all their mass and volume, with all the weight of their material in the space they are placed in. Forms that in many cases seem concerned only with themselves and their own internal system of formal relationships and meanings, fully in the ancient and modern statuary tradition. But the sharp and embattled handling with which Willy Verginer (Bressanone, 1957) provokes and caresses wood, does not result in anything archaic or hieratic: he does not make statues, totems or menhirs but images in action; they clearly show the work of the gouge, the plane, and the rasp: “all tools with short, hard names that, to those with a good eye, still seem to be in action” (G. Bachelard).

  • Seo Young Deok  (+)

Biography : Seo Young-Deok was born in 1984, South Korea, graduating from the environmental sculpture department of the University of Seoul in 2008. He has captivated international audiences for producing life-size, hyper-realistic sculptures of human figures made only with welded chains taken from bicycles and industrial machinery. Inspired by the urban lifestyle he experienced as an adult – contrasting drastically with his rural upbringing – Seo explores the relationship between humans and their environment through the creative repurposing of iron chains – a material which has played a critical role in the development of the modern world. He works with White Room since 2014.

Detailed Description : What Young-Deok Seo concerns is the human body. He offers and narrates stories based on substantial understanding and concerns about formation. The stories are inferred by molded motions and expressions of characters rather than conveyed by elucidative presentation. He is delivering stories of people’s lives through human figures. For him, man is essential and important as to no matter what is a sculpture or story. It, as expected, is man who is the motif in his work. His delivery room where various stories and men with diverse expressions are born is full of figures of the human body in different sizes. Male and female sculptures in various forms and postures which are head-sculptures, standing figures, busts, and torsos are brought together. This shows his deep and wide interests in formation of the human body. Most of them are nude sculptures, made by toiling to weld steel. They seem to be made by the way of carving, but, to be exact, by way of modelling. That is, the human bodies are not kneaded by rubbing and pressing lumps of iron, but completed by melting and linking them piece by piece. Young-Deok Seo, with his whole heart, follows conventional/legitimate production methods from beginning to the end, regards of such as drawing, modeling, casting, and welding. He does all the finishing touches by himself as well.
