  • Mohamed Abla  (+)

    Biography : Egyptian artist Mohamed Abla creates imagery that spans from realistic depictions of people in the streets of Cairo to paintings that were inspired by 1950 photographs of his family photographs to cultural renditions of the hieroglyphs and other iconography of his native roots. He is like a guide who shows us an Egypt we wouldn’t see as a tourist. His passion for his country is not only seen in his artwork but has spanned to socio-political realm where he has oftentimes risked his safety through an adamant promotion of culture and contemporary art. His convictions about exposing his people to the treasures of art and determination towards being able to teach its history and encourage its future are admirable. Whether viewing his early watercolors, black and white paintings, Chaos paintings, Nostalgia paintings or depictions of life at the River Nile, we are given a rich and comprehensive glimpse into the roots of the artist, his people and the rich Egyptian heritage both past and present. There are only a handful of Egyptian artists who are recognized outside of Egypt but Abla is one of the few who is world renowned for his attempts at building cultural bridges through the medium of art. Because of his long career, passion for the cultural climate of his country, and prolific output, he was chosen as one of the artists to participate in a major exhibition of Egyptian contemporary artists of the millennia, which traveled extensively to museums throughout Europe.

  • Michael Azgour  (+)

    Biography : Michael Azgour was born in California in 1979. He splits his time between San Francisco and Poland as both painter and teacher. His paintings are expressive and geometric abstractions informed by a process that combines a strategic, realistic technique with pattern and repetition. Although the disparate visuals and juxtaposed compositions in his work appear random, they are bits of narrative from the artist’s own life and travels. Azgour received an M.F.A. in Studio Painting from Academy of Art University, San Francisco. He also attended University of California at San Diego, Stanford University, Continuing Studies and University of British Columbia. He has exhibited widely in the United States, United Kingdom, Poland, and Hungary. His work resides in the collections of the Than Mor Art Museum in Hungary, Lyon’s Gate Entertainment Corporation in Los Angeles, CA, Hotel Union Square and the Stanley S. Langendorf Foundation in San Francisco and Aviation Capital Group in Newport Beach.

    Biography : DOWNLOAD BIOGRAPHY Kimber Berry was born in Los Angeles, California in 1970. Berry is an American abstractionist known for explosively colorful, visually dense, multidimensional canvases and installations that conjure complex universes existing within and without the time/space continuum. Her worlds, of her own making, arrived in reaction to the over-the-top glitz and advertising that pervaded the Hollywood of her youth. This environment fueled her desire to explore the psychological experience of living in an over-stimulated society, constantly bombarded by media noise. Her work combines digital elements with traditional paint. Oftentimes orchestrated upon industrial materials, these works represent a symphonic dance between the virtual world and the organic universe, challenging the viewer to discern between imagination and reality. Through her newest series of paintings, Plastic Gardens, she creates a dialogue around the human condition and raises important social questions as to how we live with nature. Continuing her exploration of digital and paint, reality and illusion, new and old technologies, Berry takes a closer look into the duality of societal expansion and growth. Using digitally manipulated photographs of paint, natural and plastic organic plants and flowers alongside and actually embedded in the paint, the highly manipulated surfaces of her paintings illustrate how highly manipulated nature has become.

  • David Cerny  (+)

    Biography : Cerny burst into the public eye in 1991 when he painted a Soviet tank, that served as a war memorial in central Prague, the color pink. Creating extreme controversy with his work, this international sculptor has been described as “witty, exciting, kinetic, crass and provacative”. Cerny is the son of a graphic designer father and a mother who was a restorer of art in the National Gallery of Prague. He learned his trade at the Academy of Applied Art in the country’s capital, studied in Boswil on a grant from the Swiss government, and also in New York City at P.S.I Artists Residence New York before taking part in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. His works are characteristically bold, courageous and reach into sensitive political, historical and social themes, all sprinkled with the unconventional artist’s sarcastic humor. In his hometown of Prague alone, Cerny has 14 installations in public spaces that have become major public attractions. In 2001 he created a non-profit cultural art and event center in a former 1920’s glass warehouse in Prague, which he named the “Meet Factory”.

    Biography : Of French origin, Laurent Craste has been living and working in Montreal for the past 23 years. His career has involved both a studio practice in contemporary ceramics and the teaching of ceramics at the college level. In 2003, Laurent Craste received the prestigious Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramists, awarded by the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. He has been a regular exhibitor at Chicago’s Sculpture Objects and Functional art (SOFA) show and has also participated in the Biennale Nationale du Canada and the Biennale Internationale de Châteauroux in France. In 2005, he was a finalist in the Carouge international competition. His research project developed as part of his Masters in Fine Arts has been awarded the Bourse d’Excellence Universitaire de l’UQAM. In 2010, Laurent Craste presented a solo exhibition in New-York at the Pulse Art Show, as well as in the Toronto International Art Fair with the SAS Gallery. He also participated to the «Montreal Art Contemporary» of the Expo 2010 in Shangaï, China. He was invited in 2011 to display his work at the Pertwee Anderson & Gold Gallery in London, UK, as well as in the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery of Waterloo in Ontario. He has also exhibited in 2012 at the Aqua Art Fair in Miami and at the Massachusset College of Art and Design Gallery in Boston. In 2013, he had a solo exhibition of his works running for 10 months in the Lab Design of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. He is currently preparing another solo exhibition for the Tom Thomson Gallery in Ontario for spring 2015.     Biography : American artist Robert Charles Dunahay was born in the United States. He currently lives and works in Palm Springs, California. Dunahay’s contemporary paintings place subjects ranging from palm trees to swaths of luxurious fabric front and center on bold hued backgrounds, elevating them from frequent images in our lives to a symbolic pedestal on the canvas worthy of wonder, confrontation and deeper reflection. His early career was spent in New York City, where he made ends meet through his superior carpentry skills before heading West for the land of sunshine and full time life as a painter. Distinguished patrons worldwide collect Dunahay’s art including the Royal Family Al Thani of Qatar, Baroness Monica Von Neumann of Switzerland and celebrities Pierce Brosnan, Kelsey Grammer and Linda Hamilton. His work is part of the corporate collections for Pepperdine University, The Financial Times, The Packard Foundation and the W Hotel. Dunahay is most known for his Palm Series of paintings depicting grand-scale palm trees in vibrant colors.     Biography : Bernard Dunaux was born in Sydney, Australia in 1957. Dunaux’s abstract works arrive instinctually, calling upon his past visual experiences. Living in many different countries has informed an evolving body of work rich with the diversities of color, shape and energy. Over the years Dunaux has continually pushed forward to create artworks that are a reflection of our time, equally balanced and strikingly classic. In his latest compositions, the use of materials such as burlap, plastic sheeting and various industrial dyes add a contemporary and immediate aspect. His ColorScapes, well suited to large architectural spaces, are composed on birch panels with gesso, spray paint and a painstaking application of mixed acrylic layers. The process results in clean, “post numeric” paintings where the repetition of gesture lends a Zen-like feel.

    Biography : Painter Zivana Gojanovic utilizes the existentialist’s journey to convey highly complex portraits of the human condition. Each painting is compelled from within, furthermore explored through a small scale drawing, and then built up through her distinct layering technique in lush oils, nurturing an overall vision of one’s place in the world. Hers is a world where abstract fields lay depth for a solitary figure, each strong of their own accord but when combined, presenting a slice of a richly, independent emotional experience. A reflective element combined with personal passion infuses her work so that each piece organically grows outward allowing the artist’s personal relationship with the piece to evolve and morph as much as the viewer’s upon final presentation. Her unique technique developed over a course of five years was first inspired by a Roman wall that provoked her to cultivate her own way to work with paint as a medium. The language that ensued became a richly, dense and various textured vocabulary of oils where densities, strata and other physical manifestations were evoked, becoming her signature voice. Gojanovic has stated that her paintings are documents of visual feelings; therefore we can see how the artist’s inner life in her birth country propelled her future career towards an expressionist sort of catharsis allowing the cycles of human life to perpetually unfold upon her canvas. Today, she lives and works in America, where she continues to express both the simplicity and complexity of one’s self onto an ever-present blank slate

    Biography : Photographer Greg Gorman was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1949. He currently divides his time between Los Angeles and Mendocino, California. For over four decades he has evolved a unique and discerning style through his portraits of celebrities, explorations into human nature and the male and female nude. Gorman’s work has been widely cataloged through books including Greg Gorman Volumes I and II; Framed, a book of photos for the award winning l.a. Eyeworks campaign; In Their Youth: Early Portraits, which incorporates 40 years of unseen work; and most recently, his tenth monograph Outside the Studio, a collection of street photography in Southeast Asia. He attended the University of Kansas for photojournalism and the University of Southern California for an MFA in cinematography. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Photographers of America, the Achievement in Portraiture Award from the Lucie Foundation and the Pacific Design Center Stars of Design award. Gorman is well known for documenting society’s peculiar obsession with the 21st century celebrity.

    Biography : Although women have been the apparent subject matter in my work, light is the primary subject . I’ve always been fascinated with light and how it evokes a continuum of time and place. My attraction to poolside settings stems from childhood memories of summer afternoons where I briefly glimpsed a sense of family, security, and joy. Ironically, my images cannot exist in physical reality, as they are highly contrived composites of various, real and imagined sources. I approach each new painting as though I am producing a film: selecting models, wardrobe changes, locations, props, time sequences, etc. For the photo shoot, I storyboard scenarios for my models so they will project what I envision. With the resulting photos, I add, delete, and re-configure information to achieve a strong visual structure. I build a “magical” work with hyper-detail which convinces viewers to believe in its reality. Portraying the passage of time, whether in momentary or monumental increments, is an ongoing interest for me. I like to think that my pieces are a visual diary of my journey through life. Now liv es and works in Bremen (Germany) The first "picture" in the history of mankind was a reflection - in a slop, a calm lake or a waterhole. And the reflection of an early human face bended over the water might well have substantially contributed to the downing of the consciousness of the human being: The self performed movements and grimaces reproduced by the reflected picture - therefore it must be me what is looking at me. The key phrase is not "cogito, ergo sum" but "video, ergo sum" -I see (me), therefore I am. Gerd Lieder discovers and encodes the world of reflections and thus he reverts to the probably most "archaic" realization processes. At the same time he is imparting to us a unique, non-repeatable detail of the reality in every single of his - necessarily - perfectly drawn pictures, as there is nothing more transient than a reflection. Only the camera - Lieder's most important hand tool apartfrom the red marten paint brushes - is able to keep this impression. Never will anybody of us see the same reality which Gerd Lieder is.showing in his pictures¬a nyhow he is pictu ring rea lity.     Detailed Description : Gerd Lieder is known for the way he shows us the visual and experiential world by means of reflection. Since 2000 he has carried different mirrors with him through the world to arrange as conspirators to his unique observations. Strategically placed to see his subjects through, this process creates a freeze-framing filter, remarking on the ways our perceptions always create personal renditions of a literal subject rather than reality. We can see this in the piece “Rendezvous”, where the artist shows us a portrait of his wife looking into a mirror, obliterated from identification but clearly intimate to his eye. Other times, he lets glass and natural reflections do the work. We see this in the piece “7.5 Million Dollar” which captures the way the light reflects from the beautiful Rolls Royce for just one split second. Once these instances are placed within the context of this quasi-still life performance, they are photographed and then painted. The finished work in turn becomes reflected with the artist’s intention. Overall, his paintings remark on the transient qualities of reality affected by experience, place, circumstance, time and the ever changing and impermanent perceptions of the viewer.

    Biography : Heiner Meyer was born in Bielefeld, Germany in 1953. He continues to live and work in Germany. In recent years Meyer has emerged as one of Germany’s most important Pop artists. He has been delivering freeze-frame glimpses of our national consumer psyche for nearly forty years. His paintings present an unbiased, outsider’s view of American Pop Culture through dynamic works combining the influential imagery of our lives. Unlike the Pop Art movement which focused on the individual everyday object, Meyer’s work highlights the stream of juxtaposing visuals fed to us daily from the past and the present that reflect upon who we are. Meyer studied liberal arts at the HBK Braunschweig with Professors Karl Schulz and Malte Sartorius where he later became a teacher himself. He has traveled extensively and been featured in exhibitions worldwide. Over 30 books and catalogs have been published about his work. From his early years as an artist, in which he was an assistant to Salvador Dali, to his recent achievement of being honored as the opening exhibition artist for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Giessen, Germany, Meyer has stayed true to his voice. Although the visuals continue to change, running through the annals of historical through present day culture, it has remained the consistent responsibility of the viewer to laden the visuals with any inner meaning, value or consideration based on their personal experience, attitude and place within paintings’ contexts.

    Detailed Description : Claudia Meyer is Swiss Artist and visual Art creator who express her creativity through two distinct and over-crossing visual Art fields. One being Contemporary Fine Art and the other being “Industrial” Art inspired by new realism. Early on Claudia Meyer trained as a graphic designer at Hochschule für Gestltung and Kunst in Luzern, and spent a year in Stuttgart, Germany where she worked as a graphic artist and made the acquaintance of Anton Stankowski, the grand master of the German design, in whose studio she was able to work. Later on she moved to New York City where she acquired a silk-screen printing major and received several prizes while studying fabric design and modern technologies at the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York. Since then she has been focusing full time on creating contemporary Art using technology, mixed media materials and nature as her main source of inspiration. Claudia Meyer artworks is exhibited in carefully selected Fine Art Galleries, Institutions Auctions and Art Fairs. And has been commissioned for High end Architectural-Design-Curator projects.

    Biography : Neil Nagy was born in 1941 in the East Los Angeles Latino community of El Sereno. Nagy is a figurative expressionist painter who draws upon the single, powerful human form as a way to explore the humanistic, personal and spiritual paths. Nagy’s inspirations have continually evolved. He came to appreciate the culture and art of Mexico as he traveled extensively to drink in the colorful life of the people and the country and to study ancient Mayan civilizations. Several residencies in the plains of the Bahio and the central western coast added to this impression on his life and especially his art. He is also influenced by the work of Rembrandt, Constable and Turner as well as Japanese art especially contemporary woodcuts. Nagy received his education at San Jose State College for Industrial Design and Art and later at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel Allende. In 2006 Nagy was selected for an important “Bay Area Figurative” Exhibition where he showed alongside Diebenkorn, Park, Oliveira and others. He has held exhibitions internationally and has been included in a number of corporate and private collections. Nagy gained exposure to the art of the Bay Area Figurative painters Manual Neri and Nathan Oliveira near San Francisco in the early 1960s. The laid-back attitude of this period in California resulted in his lighter and more humanist interpretation of the severe existential Northern European style while being informed by the explosive Abstract Expressionist style.

  • Pascal Pierme  (+)

    Biography : Pascal Pierme was born in St. Raphael, France. He lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pierme creates minimalist sculptures out of multiple mediums that help him work out puzzles related to balance, movement, inquiry, architecture and nature. The artist cites his grandfather with his fragrant woodshop as an early inspiration. Through him he learned how to be one hundred percent responsible for creating something from A-Z. Pierme studied Art History and Technique in St. Raphael, France and the Airgraph Technique in San Diego, California. He has participated in hundreds of exhibitions throughout the United States, France and Switzerland. His work has been commissioned privately by the likes of Pierre Cardin, Carol Burnett, Marriott Hotels and the Equifax World Headquarters among others. Pierme is interested in assimilating what is not supposed to fit—the combination of contrasting elements through a metaphorical chemistry. He composes elements into a moment and “freezes” it, therefore capturing a split second of evolution.

    Biography : Roger Reutimann was born in 1961 in Winterthur, Switzerland Swiss-American sculptor Roger Reutimann is working with contemporary materials like cast stainless steel and fiberglass to transform the inexhaustible subject of the human figure into present-day original and innovative works of art. His semiabstract sculptures are boldly colored and meticulously finished with high gloss automotive paints. Reutimann is interested in the purity of shapes, in simple geometric lines that are suggesting of the human form. Influenced by artists like Moore, Brancusi and Arp he also finds inspiration in industrial and automotive design. Reutimann strongly believes in perfection. His disciplined upbringing, life-long piano practice and former careers in the fields of international art fairs and product design give the selftaught artist a unique perspective on art. “I am not trying to solve the mystery of the human figure, but to deepen it”. Reutimann explains: “I’m taking my sculptures to a different level, one that includes elements, which can’t be expressed by words. To me sculpture is like painting a thousand paintings,” Reutimann says. “It adds another dimension in very permanent mediums, such that will last for generations. The third dimension in sculpture has a powerful impact on the observer, one that relates to our physical reality. It lets the artist play with different perspectives.”

    Biography : Born and raised in San Francisco, Doug Smith was fortunate to have talented, creative parents who recognized his own talent from an early age and encouraged him to pursue his art. His mother, herself an accomplished impressionist painter, exposed him to the wealth of San Francisco’s art exhibitions as a youngster, introducing him to the masters in their regular visits to the city’s outstanding museums. By age nine he had sold his first oil painting. Smith received his first formal artistic instruction at San Francisco City College as a fine art major. He then furthered his education at San Francisco Academy of Art University. At 19 he participated in his first group exhibition in the city’s Artist Cooperative Gallery. After service in the U.S. Army, Smith returned to San Francisco and joined a firm as a graphic designer. The company relocated to Southern California and he continued his training at the Art Center College of Design and the California Art Institute. Throughout his long and successful career in graphic design and art direction, Smith continued to paint and allowed his artistic “voice” to evolve. In 2000, he made the transition to focusing full-time on his passion for painting. His signature body of work has garnered enthusiasm and interest from private collectors worldwide as well as museums including the Rockwell Museum in New York and the Booth Western Art Museum in Atlanta for their permanent collections. Doug’s strong composition, bold technique, textures and vibrant colors evoke the traditions of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud of the early Bay Area Figurative School.

    Biography : Julian Voss-Andreae is a German sculptor based in Portland, Oregon. Starting out as a painter he later changed course and studied physics, mathematics, and philosophy at the Universities of Berlin, Edinburgh and Vienna. Voss-Andreae pursued his graduate research in quantum physics, participating in an experiment considered one of the modern milestones of unifying our everyday intuition with the famously bizarre world of quantum physics. He moved to the United States to study Sculpture at the Pacific Northwest College of Art from where he graduated in 2004. Voss-Andreae’s work has quickly gained critical attention. His sculpture, often inspired by his background in science, has captured the attention of multiple institutions and collectors in the United States and abroad. Recent institutional commissions include large-scale outdoor monuments for the University of Minnesota and Rutgers University (New Jersey). Voss-Andreae’s work has been featured in print and broadcast media worldwide.

    Biography : Rimi Yang was born in Osaka, Japan in 1962. Improvisational and instinctual, Rimi Yang’s paintings are intuitive balancing acts of color, texture, and technique brought forth from a self-professed chaotic emotional duality. Her work reflects a subtle blending of her Korean but Japanese-raised roots with life lived largely on the West Coast. This is seen through a juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary compositions infused with cultural imagery. Whether figurative or abstract, she builds up and tears down surfaces to search for reason. This produces vibrant and colorful explorations rich with iconic imagery spanning Eastern and Western art history. In 1986 Yang studied at Bowling Green University where she won First Place in Prints and Marietta Kirschner Wigg Print awards. In 1991 she migrated west to Los Angeles were she studied at California State University, the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art and Otis College of Art and Design followed by a summer in Florence, Italy at the Florence Academy of Art. In 2007 she spent time in residency at Pouch Cover Foundation in Canada. She has exhibited across the United States, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Europe. Yang’s paintings mix the complexity of abstract and collage techniques with a prominent central figure.
