    Detailed Description : Diana Copperwhite lives and works in Dublin. In 2012 she was a resident artist at the Josef Albers Foundation Connecticut, USA. She was a finalist in the Guasch Coranty Fundacio Painting Prize, Centre Cultural Metropolita Tecia Sala, Barcelona (2008) and was winner of the AIB Art Prize (2007). Her work is in public collections including: Irish Museum of Modern Art, Arts Council of Ireland, Limerick City Gallery of Art, Office of Public Works, Contemporary Irish Art Society, Mariehamn Stadbiblioteque, International Red Cross Netherlands, and private collections in the USA, Australia and Europe. “Diana Copperwhite makes big bold oil paintings that excite and stir our twenty-first-century perceptions. Her compelling images are both complex and energetic. She is never at a loss for the impulse to paint, though she is coy about revealing her concerns, often throwing the viewer just a few clues and leaving a lot of room for the imagination. She creates an exquisite tension between abstraction and figuration or representation of any kind.     Biography : Danny Rolph has an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art, London and was awarded the Rome Scholarship at the British School at Rome. He is a professor of Fine Art at Bucks New University and is a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools, London. His work is represented in many international collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Tate Gallery, London.

    Detailed Description : Rolph’s exhibition of a new body of work made over the last year showcases the artist’s signature Triplewall paintings. A continuation of his visually impactful paintings, these new works reflect his evolving exploration of high velocity color and layered narratives. The compositional potential of his painting strategies on Triplewall plastic allow the viewer’s senses to be fully engaged. The paintings are layered and emotive, combining paint, drawings and collage with art historical and Pop Art references.

    Biography : Per Adolfsen lives and works in Odense, Denmark, where he was born in 1964. His earlier work comprised emotionally charged acrylic paintings that seamlessly merge representational and abstraction and text, and engaged the viewer in a seductive world of fantasy and uncertainty that recalls classic Scandinavian angst. His most recent contemplative oil paintings, a marked break with his prior series, demonstrates his evolving commitment to using the medium as tool for breaking past stereotype and false exteriors in order to know other people and one’s self. The neutral palette and minimal backgrounds in many pieces allow the viewer to be fully focused on the people foregrounded in the paintings and punctuated by moments of brilliant color—a lavender head scarf, crystalline blue eyes. Adolfsen’s recent portraiture points the way toward an ethical vision by seeking to represent the colorful bonds that tie people together.

  • Carlos Rodriguez Cardenas  (+)

    Biography : Rodríguez Cárdenas was born in 1962 in Sancti Spiritus, Villa Clara, and completed his arts studies in 1983 in Havana’s Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA). He formed part of the René Portocarrero workshop, where he began to make a name for himself in serigraphy, drawing and painting. He became a key figure in the resurgence of criticism and of the arts movement at the time. His participation played a decisive role in the birth of the provisional group. From among the imagery created in the late 1980s, which questioned and made ironic the “revolutionary” state slogans, some of Rodríguez Cárdenas's proposals became iconic representations of his generation such as his self-portrait featuring him bare-chested, the skin painted like a brick wall, on which the words ”I am my home” are written; from his neck hangs a skeleton with a comic blurb that reads “I do not exist, only my intention”. In Rodríguez Cárdenas’s work, parody, humor and caricature tend away from coarseness, although they may confront the audience with what is vulgar in a society in crisis. His work invites the spectator to question reality, to see beyond the world of the official word imposed by a system that had become senseless. More than anyone,[1] he suffered censorship. In his case, it was not a conjured-up badge of honor that he pinned on himself to face banishment from his country. From the time after he went into exile in Mexico in the early 1990s until he finally settled in New York, he focused his art, without renouncing his previous commitments, on the artistic quality of his subjects, of this designs. His art imparted his compositions with even more of their own particular, distinctive character than before. During the next few years, Rodríguez Cárdenas held solo exhibits at Obra Reciente, Galeria Nina Menocal, Mexico; D.F., Carlos Cardenas, Galeria Ramis F. Barquet in Monterrey, Mexico; and, in 1993, About the Blue Wall, Fredric Snitzer Gallery, Coral Gables, Florida;

    Detailed Description : In his native Cuba during the 1980s, Carlos Rodríguez Cárdenas developed an influential style of painting that deployed irony, sly humor, and a shrewd parody of High-Modernist sophistication to mock the conceits of official state-sponsored imagery and utopian sloganeering. In Geographical Mind in the Architecture of Landscape Cárdenas turns a discerning eye toward the United States, delivering a body of work that seems at first glance like a love letter to the American landscape and to the modern city—New York being his adopted home of many years now—yet gradually reveals an undercurrent of wariness and disquiet about our national myths and pretensions. Alongside this is an extended meditation on his own migrations, and on the endless tension between the fundamental human desire for stability and the inevitability of flux in our lives. References to monumental constructions, modern technology, and utopian aspirations have always been a cornerstone of Cárdenas’s visual language. In these works, he uses such imagery to powerful effect, juxtaposing bold, semi-abstracted renditions of cityscapes and sea vessels with picturesque antique views of landmark buildings and collaged insets from maps of the U.S. and other countries; the combination evokes the grand narratives of progress and power that have always informed this country’s collective self-image, yet also makes these stories seem quaint, or even wistfully naive.

    Detailed Description : Through her inventions, Susana Guerrero is set upon taking up themes of mythology and utopia (mythopia), bringing together a genealogy of the materials, an anthropology of human experience, guided by the murmur of a dream. She allows a perceptual interpretation of a different kind. Many of Guerrero’s artworks evoke a contemporary mythology that puts on the same plane the visible physical reality, the substance of dreams and the subconscious, the hidden reality. There’s a kind of reformulation of ancient mythologies, constituting personal thoughts of the sacred through mythical stories, traditions and legends, superstitions and intuitive revelations. In the process of making the artwork, Guerrero reveals a binding ritual. The choice of every material, the configuration of every shape, of every element, brings a poetic meaning and symbolism to her artwork.

She has exhibited in major venues around the world and has been exhibiting and lecturing as a guest artist at universities, including University of Nevada in NV, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and St. Joseph’s University in PA.

    Detailed Description : Nadja Verena Marcin is a performance and media artist who focuses on human behavior, elemental emotions and psychological responses linked to role-playing through video, performance and photography. Inflated by playful, vigorous images, poetical texts, and handmade props, her work exposes ambiguities depicting the constructive/deconstructive potential of man’s characteristic, often dialectic behavior.     Detailed Description : John A. Parks is a painter who has shown widely in the US and England over the last thirty years. His work is represented in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Royal College of Art Collection, the Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design and many private collections. He is a member of the faculty of the School of Visual Arts in New York. Beginning with his meticulous but lyrical realist paintings in the late seventies Parks has concentrated on themes of English life and the broader issue of the relationship between personal and national identity. A long series of delicately romantic paintings in the eighties explored the English obsession with the transformational properties of gardening and landscaping. In the late eighties and nineties Parks shifted his attention to British public imagery where he applied a whimsical, playful and sometimes alarming painterly attack to undermine and decode some of the nation’s most preciously held icons. For the last several years Parks has been using a finger painting technique – literally painting with his fingers – to explore the imagery that occupied his imagination as a child. Paintings of trains, hunting scenes and monuments have recently been superseded my images of schoolyards and the pursuits of boyhood – cycling, exploring, fighting and camaraderie. “The recent work is all executed from memory,” says Parks. “And in using finger painting I’m using a childish method to explore childish things. For all that, these are far from childish paintings. I’m amazed at the rich surfaces and evocative properties of the pictures I’m able to make this way. They are starting to feel like the very stuff of memory. I’ve never been more excited about what I’m doing.”

    Detailed Description : All my work in a general sense deals with the question of identity, understood as the system of judgments about a person, culture or phenomenon. This question is generally treated from the prism of Caribbean popular culture, using the humor and elements of this culture, and such cliches formed about the culture, that when it comes from them, it builds images that simultaneously incarnate that reality, and question it. The ambivalence of genres is also a topic that is near to me, a game of illusions with the spectator, the doubt in the identity of a concept or an image, the phenomena that pretend to be one thing, but that are really something else or both at the same time. Although my work has a conceptual root, where the idea conditions formal elements; the sensory sense, the sensations that emanate from the forms of my work are fundamental to them. In my artwork I am used to working with different media depending on how interested I am: painting, installations, sculptures, prints, ceramics; this, however, has been associated generally with the soft sculpture (sewn and stuffed fabrics), a technique that brings me closer to the craftwork of the popular cultures of the Caribbean, incorporating real chosen objects.

    Detailed Description : Tanja Selzer draws her motifs from the daily media-related flood of images as components of human seceneries, figures in wild natural spectacles or single persons and animals infront of or inside a natural background.     Detailed Description : Lien Truong’s art boldly investigates ideological models of our history and culture. In her most recent works, she combines the Hudson River Valley School “western” landscape, gestural abstractions, cultural textile designs, and compositions from Asian war prints. She mixes layers of images and departs from a standard visual experience. Truong’s landscapes and figures, culled from the historic and recent past, present “narrative histories” through a type of blended painting.     Detailed Description : Vincench’s take on conceptual art is guided by issues that are relevant to Cuban social life and by his religious affiliation and political vision. The artist uses elements characteristic of religious Afro-Cuban rituals and breaks them down with graphic simplicity. Cuban and Caribbean art is typically spontaneous, emotional, and colorful; however, in the 1980s, the region’s politics changed radically, causing Cuban artists to reflect more on the cognitive rather than the aesthetic process of art making. Artists such as Vincench thus became increasingly introspective and critical, which has resulted in his more minimalist and abstract style. Cuban, b. 1973
