  • Phillip Humm  (+)

Biography : Known primarily for his large-format narrative paintings and sculpture work exploring the contradictions and idiosyncrasies of contemporary life, Philipp Rudolf Humm is an artist with a long history of skillfully manipulating the iconography of popular culture. A philosopher by training, Humm began image making at a young age until, like Gauguin before him, a career in business took him away from his own practice and saw him apply his talents instead to roles such as CEO of Vodafone and Amazon. On returning to his first passion, Humm’s contemporary practice brought together the intellectual rigour of a trained philosopher with the cynical eye of one used to deploying the iconography of commercial imagery. Through stories based on history and on societal critique, Humm dissects concepts of authenticity, facticity, absurdity, time and existence. Figures familiar from advertising, film and celebrity culture people canvases that themselves reference icons of classical art; Botticelli’s Venus, Manet’s Olympia, Fouquet’s Melun Diptych Madonna. Compositions are defined by both their origins in Heideggerian existentialist and metaphysical thinking, and by their rendering in a hard-edged, Pop Art style that saw critic Edward Lucie-Smith label Humm as the first ‘Pop-Expressionist’. Philipp Rudolf Humm was born in 1959 in Germany. He studied Philosophy at Saarland University, Germany, then Business at Saarland University and IMD in Switzerland and on returning to his art practice studied at London’s Fine Art Studio School and Florence’s Academy of Art. Solo shows of his work have taken place at London’s Riflemaker Gallery, Hix and at an exclusive event at Saatchi and PURE London. He has been a finalist for the Ashurst, Circle Art, Sunny Art Centre and Broadway Art Festival, and his work has been included in group shows in London (Walton Fine Arts), Germany (Sans Titre, Werkhallen) and Venice (Palazzo Ca’Zanardi). In 2018 his work will be shown at the Museum

Detailed Description : Kwon Soonik’s series “Absence of Ego” is somewhat different from his earlier works. The colors and shapes of the numerous circles filling the canvas are in subtle contrast with each other, giving the impression of both intensity and calmness. Some smaller circles are embedded in larger ones; some circles are arranged within other geometric shapes such as squares and triangles; some are on their own while others are clustered; some seem to emit light, while others withdraw within themselves. The subtle changes in color and texture, the interference of light, and the position from which we observe the painting all cause it to change and waver constantly. In order to set the positions of the circles, the artist makes a rough sketch of grids on the canvas with a pencil. After applying the ground-color, he draws the circles with paints of various tones. Then, he mixes fine sand-like materials with the paints and applies them on the circles in order to create a relief-looking image. Next, he repeatedly rubs and paints the surface with his pencil lead. The long and grueling process lasts until he achieves a rough but warm texture, as well as the shining metallic surface produced by the graphite. Though this process requires a considerable amount of time and patience, the artist himself chose this method for inner training and thought. For Kwon Soonik, painting is like an act of ‘training’. By immersing himself in the act of rubbing and painting graphite, he leads not only himself but also the spectators into an ego-free world. In an effort to break away from his earlier attempt to express himself in various ways, he now abandons the figurative forms and fills the canvas with the repetitive expression of the ‘dot’, the basis of all plastic art.

  • Geraldine Laly  (+)

Detailed Description : Geraldine started out at the Grande Chaumière Academy in Paris, the workshop of notorious painters such as Gauguin, Modigliani, Lhote… and then mastered her technique at the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts. After several exhibitions, she decided to become a professional painter. Even when she is not painting, her creative spirit wanders. Geraldine easily switches from paint brushes to a camera with her eyes still on the alert. Back at the workshop, photos and paintings intertwine through the doing of collages and the working of materials. They become one in subtle alchemy. Geraldine sees every day of her life as an artist, as an adventure and a blessing. An outstanding colorist! That is what I would say if given one word to describe Geraldine Laly. Except that, the fulfilled artist she is, for ever in search of harmony amongst her colours, also stands as the expression of talent nourished by sensitivity and intelligence, that delivers powerful and eloquent pieces of work whilst still overflowing with balance and serenity. As such, Geraldine allows us to share her internal peace, thus offering whoever is willing to dive into the deep and magnificent ocean of her personal creations, a blessing. Full of light and contrasts, her variations give us a glimpse of eternity. An eternity that Geraldine generously hands over to us, thus allowing us to embark on a journey of precious introspection, in a soft way, one totally exempt of brutality. There also lies Geraldine talent: her art gives us an unaware opportunity of a homecoming and a return to nature. Geraldine’s art of painting simply makes people happy! It is an ode to tolerance, curiosity towards others, and to creativity since she works mostly from her own photos. In this way, Geraldine’s sharp eye and vivacious spirit expand to their full dimension. It boils down to Geraldine’s burning interior dialogue revealing itself in each and every one of her art pieces. As for us, we indulge in the divine pleasure of let
