Detailed Description : Frank Hyder presents “The Janis Project” The Janis Project has its roots in several camps. The Roman god Janus lends its name and basic concept of a two-faced god. To the Romans, this dual gaze represented the moment when something ends and something else begins. It is a moment of clarity, reflection and possibility. The Temple of Janus still stands in Rome. The original Janis is a large-scale, self-contained, monumental inflatable sculpture. There are now 23 inflatable sculptures, and they resemble an oversized childhood toy in the shape of the human head, are filled with air but carry a serious message. Every Janis figure is two faced with two distinct “skin” colors. In Janis, we come in different color skins but are all on equal footing. All the Janis figures are wearing face paint. This references a global human truth - all humans paint their faces to appear “better” or to mask their true selves. The name denotes a neutral gender at a time when one's sex is as diverse as their skin tone. Janis is street art appearing suddenly in a wide variety of locales, indoor and out; a form one did not expect yet finds amusing. Currently "The Janis Project" consists not only of the inflatable sculptures, which come in a variety of heights from 6-23 feet tall, but sculptures made of colored concrete; liquid 4# styrofoam, translucent fiberglass with LEDs and bronze, as well as paintings in acrylic and watercolors. My impulse arose out of recent attention given to race, gender and religious diversity in the U.S. and my desire is to provide a moment of epiphany or awareness. Janis has appeared from Istanbul to Jerusalem, Rome to Paris, London to St. Petersburg, Philadelphia to Miami, Panama to Vancouver, Cuba to Machu Picchu and onward as it continues its journey.
