Howard Schatz (Chicago 7/30/1940 - )

Howard Schatz gave up a career as a retinal surgeon to follow his passion for photography. He was awarded the 2015 IPA International Photography Award for Book of the Year for his retrospective, Schatz Images: 25 Years. The IPA Awards, administered by the Lucie Foundation, are considered among the most prestigious in the field of photography. His work was recently included in the Brooklyn Museum exhibition "Who Shot Sports."

Schatz first established a following in the 1990s with two collections of underwater photography, Water Dance and Pool Light. With H2O, Schatz takes the magic of weightlessness and the beauty of dance to new heights. Whether in single portraits or as part of a larger, spectacular ballet, his dancers are as utterly elegant as they are phantasmagorical. They appear before the camera as though borrowed from a dream.
