About

Everard Read is Africa’s oldest commercial art gallery. Established in Johannesburg in 1913, Everard Read has since
its inception been associated with pre-eminent artists working in South Africa.

In the contemporary era, Everard Read is at its core a gallery dedicated to exhibiting paintings and sculpture by
South Africa’s finest modern and contemporary artists. The development of young artists’ careers is also a crucial
component of the gallery’s mission. Whilst artists from the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, Nigeria and the USA are exhibited, the gallery retains at its core an impressive stable of South African artists.

An important contributor to the already vibrant cultural life of South Africa, Everard Read maintains a strong and
unique identity. A programme of solo and group exhibitions is often accompanied by publications, serving to
showcase established contemporary artists as well as the emerging younger generations. The curatorial directors
seek to intersperse contemporary art exhibitions with human technology and scientific installations.

A close dialogue between all of the Everard Read and CIRCA spaces ensures that the galleries have even further
access to the finest paintings, sculptures and new media works from abroad and around the sub-continent.
