About the Artist
He was born in A Coruña. From a very young age, he showed an inclination towards drawing and painting, participating in his first exhibition at the age of 13 at the City Hall of Ferrol. He studied to become a business expert but never abandoned his great passion, painting. Aurelio Lombera granted him a scholarship at his Painting Academy, where, for five years, he shared classes with Rogelio Puente and other prominent painters from A Coruña. Later, he attended the studio of Vidal Lombán, a painter from Ourense based in A Coruña, for another five years.
His painting is realistic, but beyond mere visual enjoyment, his intention is to take the viewer from objects and human figures to another depth. Hands, old shoes, fruits, clothing items... are represented hyper-realistically, but they lose their real meaning to achieve sensory magnitude. Behind the Subjective Hyperrealism
that defines Prieto, there is a certain surrealism, relying on symbol-images that transcend the appearance of objects to transport us to a dreamlike and poetic world, choosing a working method similar to the one proposed by Magritte. His work is part of numerous public and private collections, including the Abanca Collection, the María José Jove Foundation, the BBVA Collection, the Xunta de Galicia, the Deputation of A Coruña, and the Collection of the Parliament of Galicia.
In December 2023, The Cuban Museum of the Diaspora hosted his first U.S. museum solo show.
Artistic Technique & Materials
Medium: Oil on linen primed with rabbit‑skin glue. Average size: 120 × 100 cm (47 × 35 in). Prieto employs multi‑layer glazing and chiaroscuro modeling reminiscent of Spanish Baroque masters, fused with photographic realism and subtle social symbolism.
