About the Artist
oil, colored pencil and acrylic on unprimed canvas
Rodrigo Valles Jr, a self-taught visual artist. He began his career in 2005 and deftly blends heritage, personal narrative, and social commentary in his vibrant and deeply personal works. From international art fairs to gallery exhibitions across the country, Rodrigo has garnered a loyal global following, with his pieces increasingly sought after by new collectors.
His figurative works pay homage to his Mexican-American upbringing, portraying pop icons in everyday settings, resonating with themes of pride, belonging, uncertainty, celebration, and triumph. They are working class heroes, totems and explorations of identity. Meanwhile, his abstracts, inspired by urban decay and fractal patterns found in nature, offer a captivating exploration of color, texture, and form. They are appealing for reasons that are perhaps innate, primal and codified into our genetics.
Rodrigo's unique perspective is further enriched by his use of hip-hop lyrics as artwork titles, adding layers of meaning and emotion to his already compelling creations. Through his art, Rodrigo invites viewers to delve into a world where personal history intersects with universal themes, leaving a lasting impression on all who engage with his work.
In my artistic practice, I utilize vintage typography and images sourced from old comic books, pulp fiction materials and movies, infusing them with layers of acrylic and spray paint to create compositions on wood and canvas. Often the wood is cut into unique shapes that enhance the story. Stencils are applied, painted, sanded to remove some of the image, then applied and painted again.
Central to my process is the creation of many different hand-cut stencils. Before the paint even hits the canvas hours are spent meticulously cutting stencils. The juxtaposition of vintage typography and iconic characters with modern mediums allows me to explore the birth of cool, pulp fiction, and romantic drama.
By layering these elements, I seek to evoke a sense of temporal dissonance, inviting viewers to contemplate the passage of time and the evolution of visual culture layer upon layer.
Ultimately, my work is a celebration of the layers of storytelling and the enduring allure of vintage aesthetics. By repurposing and recontextualizing these elements, I aim to breathe new life into forgotten narratives and offer viewers a glimpse into a bygone era, reimagined through the lens of contemporary art.

As a child of 4 years old, Dymtro’s mother noticed he had a talent for fine arts. She nurtured this in every possible way. She introduced him to books about great artists, showed him collections of paintings by Picasso, Dali, Shishkin, Van Gogh, Monet, Da Vinci, Raphael, and others and exposed him to every facet of the art world she could.
As a teenager while studying at school, his teachers noted his talent and unusual style. They helped him organize his first exhibitions. Soon, collectors from Ukraine became interested in his works and bought them for their private collections. He realized that art was his calling. He elected to study art in college and sharpen his talent with academic knowledge.
His base of collectors continued to grow after moving to Kyiv. He continued to exhibit and grew his collectors in the USA, Hong Kong, Ecuador, and United. His works made their way into the private collections of notable Ukrainians and collectors abroad.
Dmytro’s ideas and concepts overgrew the framework of the easel. He needed to express talent on a bigger stage. Entire rooms and homes became his canvas. He branched out from painting and designed chandeliers, sculptures, stained glass windows, and bas-reliefs. He transformed entire living spaces into one continuous work of art. Now based in Medellin, Colombia he continues to expand his collectors and add to his already prolific portfolio of works and accomplishments.
As the evolution and growth of consciousness takes place, the evolution of thoughts leads to the invention and search for the Fibonacci formula, which is the ideal proportion created by nature, inherent in all living things - here the Vitruvian man is shown as a symbol of the ideal proportion of a human being.
The family tree as a code of procreation, the system of planets of the universe as a symbol of the spine of the galaxy of human consciousness; the symbolism of the countdown to history in the form of a sunflower is shown here; the biblical theme of the fall, wisdom symbols, symbols of the connection of fire and water, symbols of death, rebirth, and the presence of 2 structures at the same time: angelic and demonic. Shown the symbolism of Jesus Christ in the form of a Fish, the phases of the moon and interaction with the sun, personifying the Egyptian God Ra.
Technically, the sculpture was painted in exclusive author’s graphic stained glass technique with ethnic parametric motifs that allow filling the work of art with the maximum symbolic meaning. the sculpture itself is made with a plaster mortar on a metal base, covered with elastic rubber paste
*This technically complicated masterpiece took months to make
